While having a baby 5  years after the twins has given me challenges I wouldn’t have expected, it has also provided me with the opportunity to try out diapers that weren’t on the market when the twins were still in diapers.  I’m having a lot of fun trying out all the new fluff and I thought I would share my thoughts on some of them.

In keeping with our Canadian pride theme, the first diaper I am going to review is none other than the AppleCheeks™ diapering system.

AppleCheeks™ are a breakthrough in cloth diapering. Taking advantage of recent advances in the textile industry, they combine form with function, providing you with the best fitting, most-effective reusable diaper on the market to date.
All AppleCheeks™ cloth diapers and accessories are proudly designed and manufactured in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and have been tested on their own babies!

While AppleCheeks™ boast a larger weight spread for their 2 sizes of diapers, I’m finding that their size 1 diaper fits the same as any other small sized diaper on the market.  Piper weighs 14lbs and is already on the largest setting.  She’s only in the 50% percentile for growth so she’s not an overly robust baby.  However, the thing I LOVE about AppleCheeks™, that other manufacturers don’t offer, is their extender tabs.  With these tabs I can prolong the use of the size 1 diaper by getting 2 extra snap adjustments on the diaper.  Extender tabs come in the 10 permanent colours and you can mix and match for ultimate cuteness!

I do find the AppleCheeks™ bulkier than some of the other diapers on the market but their performance is outstanding!  I have not experienced any leaks or “poosplosions” in the AppleCheeks™.  Overall I’m very impressed with these diapers.  Piper likes them too!  I have only used the system as a traditional “pocket” diaper; but, I LOVE that you can choose to use them as a cover and insert and change only the insert.  The ratio for using the AppleCheeks™ system this way is 3 covers : 9 inserts, cutting the cost of diapering your baby significantly and making AppleCheeks™ one of the more affordable cloth diapering systems on the market.

Since I like this diaper so much, I want you to try it out and I’m giving one away FREE!  When we reach 500 fans on Facebook we will randomly draw a winner for 1 AppleCheeks™ cover and insert.  The winner can pick their size, colour and insert fiber (bamboo, 2-layer hemp or 3-layer hemp).  Become a fan today for your chance to win!

Miracle Diapes Is Now The Cloth Diaper Foundation

empowering families, improving the environment

As Miracle Diapers has grown so has the number of families they assist.  In 2009, they helped over 450 babies directly, more than 100 babies through sponsorship and local distribution, and assisted other charities with the same mission as well!

To better serve those families Miracle Diapers reaccessed it’s structure and practices.  They have:

  • New leadership with Roxanna Jolly-CEO and Lisa Johnston-Operations Manager and Board Chair
  • Relocated their headquarters to Katy, Texas
  • Restructured how they process and accept applications
  • Opened a retail store for fundraising
  • Founded a new membership program
  • Welcomed several new board members from the cloth diapering industry

In it’s fifth year Miracle Diapers wants to continue moving forward and has decided to take on a new name that better describes the organization and it’s mission.

Miracle Diapers is now The Cloth Diaper Foundation

“We felt that a more appropriate name would help the community have a better understanding of who we are, as we have often been mistaken for a diaper manufacturer.  Our desire to move forward and build a legacy of support for the cloth diapering community will be reflected in our new name:  The Cloth Diaper Foundation”

– Roxanna Jolly, CEO, The Cloth Diaper Foundation

Monetary donations fell last year due to the economy.  Which means there are more families out there for The Cloth Diaper Foundation to help!  While diaper donations are always appreciated, we must be able to financially support organization growth.  Let’s make this happen together and spread the CD love. Visit http://clothdiaperfoundation.org today to find out how you can help!

To assist in fund raising efforts, in the month of February, Tracy Whittemore and Lisa Adkins from The Cloth Diaper Company have so graciously offered to match, product for product, each Cloth Diaper Company product sold (DryBees, Wahmies, Rocky Mountain Diapers) in The Cloth Diaper Foundation Retail Store with an equal donation to our organization.

(Example – Purchase a Rocky Mountain Diaper OS Pocket, CDC will donate our organization a RMD OS Pocket, DryBees for DryBees, etc.)

Our newest member of the family, Piper.  She was born on Oct 16, weighing in at 7lbs 6oz via c-section after my blood pressure had reached a dangerous 140/100.  Later that afternoon, Piper was admitted to the Level II nursery at McMaster Children’s Hospital for low blood sugar where she was put on an IV.  While in the nursery she started experiencing bradycardia’s (low heart rate dips) and apneas (stopped breathing) and so she was kept in the nursery until they could determine what was causing these spells and she stopped having them.  After several tests including: 2 ECG’s, 2 cardiology consults, 1 genetics consult and lab work-up to rule out Turner & Nunes Syndromes, 1 head ultrasound, 1 abdominal ultrasound and a chest x-ray it was determined that everything was fine.  After 2 weeks in the hospital we were finally able to bring our baby girl home.  We continue to see a paediatrician on a regular basis to ensure there aren’t any long-term problems from the spells she experienced early on.  She is now 3 months old and thriving.  Here is a pic of her showing off her DryBees AIO last month.

I can’t believe the time is upon us.  The newest For Baby with Love baby will be arriving via c-section on October 22.  We will leave the online store open; however, understandably we will be a little busy for at least a week while I recover in hospital and adjust to having a new baby at home.

I ask that you all bear with us as we welcome our newest addition and I’ll be sure to post as soon as we’re home with pictures.
